    Shimmy Series

Shimmy was inspired by a real-life event.

Anne Cateaux - Athour

My boys witnessed the drowning of a young fawn at our local Vancouver Island beach. Following the tragic event my mind spun a tale that kept the inner child in me completely entertained and helped my sons overcome the sadness they felt. It was also my attempt to answer the age-old question where do our pets go when they die?

Volume 1

Shimmy

When 12-year-old Evan, his younger brother Gavin and their friend Meagan witness the drowning of a one-month old fawn, they are shocked to discover that they have opened a door to a world they never knew existed. Talking dead animals, buried gold, a friendship tested to the limit and an obnoxious bully keep the trio on their toes. Set against the beautiful back drop of Vancouver Island, the children must use their cunning minds, fierce determination, and sense of humour to overcome every obstacle that is thrown their way.

Shimmy Background

Heroes come in all shapes and sizes. Carolynn, a 150-year-old shimmering owl introduces the children to a world of Shimmies. Hubert, a one-month old fawn, his mother Abigail, the Biggsy, two raccoons, Rad-knows-ways, a cocky beaver and Madeline, a Blue Jay far from home soon become their closest friends. Reddy Bun Buns, a baby bunny, an Irish wolfhound, and a massive Gray whale round out the circle of Shimmies.

When the children meet Barry the Pig and his albino friend Donkey, they learn of lost treasure. Teamed up with their best friend Lucas William Gabriel, III, otherwise known as Coolio, they use their brain, brawn, and persistence to solve the mystery of Canada’s most notorious religious zealot, Brother XII, and his lost gold. Through laughter, tears, lost and triumph, the courageous children of man learn the true meaning of love, friendship, and the truth of never-ending life.

A Shimmy’s Story

Dramatically cut off from their family, friends and the Shimmies, Evan, Gavin, Meagan and Coolio must band together to stay alive in a world where they do not belong. Their only link to their home is a dead horned owl named Carolynn, who with each passing day, seems to lose her grip on reality and her memory on why the children are in the calamity they are in. Madeline, their beloved blue jay has no recollection of who they are and how at one time she hovered lovingly over them like a mother.

Left to defend for themselves in a hostile land, they have no choice but to deceive the strangers who quickly come to think of them as kin and friend. Unprepared for being swept up in the intrigue of coal barons, lawlessness and colonists who rush to cash in on the gold rush, the lost children must grow up quickly and depend on each other, as they never had before.

Despite their determination to get back to their loved ones, they are forced to come to terms with the fact that they might never get home. Faced with this truth, they are required to accept what it means to be a young teenager on an island where intrigue and mysteries abound.
